Some rural hospitals now have access to the UKZN network

ICS has partnered with the College of Health Sciences to provide network connectivity to certain hospitals around the KZN Province. We have in the previous years completed work in urban areas such as Wentworth Hospital, Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital and in the Midlands region the Greys Hospital to name a few.

The College of Health Sciences and Rural Health saw a need to provide students that spend six weeks in the rural hospitals with the same comforts that student doctors in urban hospitals receive. The project was formed from this necessity.

UKZN’s affiliation with SANRen has allowed us to have network connectivity in the inner parts of KZN, thus enabling us to provide the UKZN network to remote hospitals that we were unable to reach before. UKZN-Howard campus makes use of the SANRen network to connect to UNIZULU Richards Bay campus, then connect to remote hospitals via the radio frequency technology.

We have to date completed three hospitals and are in the final stages of our forth one. This has improved the lives of both the students and the lecturers tremendously. They are now able to communicate effectively and hold classes over video technology with other members at other various sites.

The hospitals are housed with desktop machine, WI-FI and other office equipment to help with the day to day running of the centre. Students also get to have Wi-Fi installed in their place of residence within the hospital grounds.

There have been challenges but we have enjoyed being a part of a project that makes a difference in the students’ academic progress as well as help the rural communities that get to benefit from the presence of the students in their community.
